Description |
The Synergistetes is a recently recognized phylum of anaerobic bacteria that shows Gram-negative staining and have rod/vibrioid cell shape. The Synergistetes inhabits a majority of anaerobic environments including animal gastrointestinal tracts, soil, oil wells, and wastewater treatment plants and they are also present in sites of human diseases such as cysts, abscesses, and areas of periodontal disease.

Irritable bowel syndrome [ICD-11: DD91] |
Description |
Numbers of Synergistetes significantly increased in irritable bowel syndrome than control. |

Periodontal disease [ICD-11: DA0C] |
Description |
The metabolomic discovery of 2 novel cyclodipeptides that have been reported to serve as quorum-sensing and/or bacteriocidal/bacteriostatic molecules, in association with Synergistetes, suggests a potential role in periodontal biofilm dysbiosis and periodontal disease that warrants further investigation. |
