Description Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an aerobic, Gram negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming diplococcus bacterium and a member of the family Neisseriaceae of the subclass of the class Proteobacteria. Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections are acquired by sexual contact and usually affect the mucous membranes of the urethra in males and the endocervix and urethra in females.

Disease Relevance
Female pelvic inflammatory disease  [ICD-11: GA05]
Description Neisseria gonorrhoeae is one of the main etiological agents of sexually transmitted diseases. The asymptomatic course of the infection and its resistance to antibiotics can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease. [1]
          Infertility  [ICD-11: GA31]
Description Neisseria gonorrhoeae is one of the main etiological agents of sexually transmitted diseases. The asymptomatic course of the infection and its resistance to antibiotics can lead to infertility. [1]
          Meningococcal disease  [ICD-11: 1C1C]
Description The host-adapted human pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the causative agent of gonorrhoea. [2]
Host Genetic Factors (HGFs)
          rs62196761
HGF ID HGF1595 HGF Info       Class Single Nucleotide Polymorphism: Intron variant (SNP-IV)
Description The rs62196761 SNP was significantly associated with the abundance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (p-value<1.00E-08). [3]
Host Immune Factors (HIFs)
          HE2alpha
HIF ID HIFM0291 HIF Info       Class Antimicrobial peptide (AMP)
Description The HE2alpha peptide could kill or inactivate Neisseria gonorrhoeae(deactivate enzymatic activity) rapidly through different mechanisms and exhibited time- and dose-dependent antibacterial effects on all Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates tested. [4]
          CEA cell adhesion molecule 1
HIF ID HIFM0057 HIF Info       Class Checkpoint molecule (CM)
Description CEACAM1 serves as a receptor for Neisseria gonorrhoeae pathogens in humans. [5]
          Immunoglobulin G
HIF ID HIFM0270 HIF Info       Class Immunoglobulin (Ig)
Description Neisseria gonorrhoeae could induce IgG responce. [6]
          Immunoglobulin A1
HIF ID HIFM0275 HIF Info       Class Immunoglobulin (Ig)
Description The activity of IgA1 proteases from Neisseria gonorrhoeae could effect enzymolysis of human immunoglobulin A1(lgA1). [7]
          CD4+ regulatory T cells
HIF ID HIFC0034 HIF Info       Class T cells (TCs)
Description Greater CD4+ T cell responses was elicited by oral immunization with the ghost vaccine candidate than Neisseria gonorrhoeae DNA vaccine alone. [6]
